The absurdity of music artists: Those who were let down by paid shows in 2022

The Nigerian entertainment industry, particularly the music sector, will face a number of challenges in 2022. However, one major flaw that Nigerian musicians displayed over the past year was a pattern of either showing up late for paid shows or not showing up at all.

Potpourri looks at some of Nigeria's best musicians, who didn't show up to shows they were supposed to.

Daniel Kizzey: In all honesty, Kizz Daniel, a perennial hitmaker, had a good year in 2022. He demonstrated a different aspect of his musical talent in the past year. However, Kizz Daniel was involved in a few controversies that he could have avoided if he had done a few good things, despite his musical success.
In 2022, Kizz Daniel had trouble showing up to the shows he was paid to perform at. He didn't show up for one of the two fights he had with show promoters last year and showed up late for the other.

On July 7, 2022, Kizz Daniel failed to show up for a show in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States, and caused four hours of fan wait time. The audience was enraged when he finally appeared on stage and performed for 20 minutes.

Kizz Daniel was detained by Tanzanian authorities in August of last year for failing to perform at a paid show on Sunday, August 7, 2022. Steven Uwah, a Nigerian living in Turkey, promoted the concert and claimed to have paid Kizz Daniel $60,000 for the event.

On an Instagram live session with Daddy Freeze, Uwah lamented that he had spent a lot of money organizing the show, and that fans had paid as much as $2000 to $10,000 for tickets and tables.

The promoter revealed that the artist actually arrived on time for the show but refused to perform because the airline that brought him in did not bring his luggage, which contained a particular gold chain that he insisted he must wear while performing on stage.
However, Kizz Daniel was freed from police custody and went on to perform for Tanzanians before returning to Nigeria.

Peruzzi: At the middle of last year, it was said that Peruzzi had been paid N3 million in two installments for a show he didn't go to. Through his attorney, Ademola Adefolaju, his client, Mr. Udomah Daniel Idoteyin, demanded compensation for the breach of contract.

The lawyer revealed in a letter dated August 4, 2022, titled "Breach of Contract and Obtaining By False Pretence the Sum of N3,000,00,00 with Sundry Expenses from Mr. Udomah Daniel Idoteyin," that N3.67 million was spent on the show, which included booking hotel rooms and flights. However, there was no indication that Peruzzi had responded to the letter.

Wizkid: After the Nigerian superstar failed to attend a concert in Ghana in December, Wizkid was accused of breaking his contract. A 40,000-seat Accra stadium was scheduled to host the show titled "Wizkid Live" on Saturday.

Not only did Wizkid not show up, but he also didn't explain why. This irritated his fans, as a social media video showed some of them leaving the stadium by 4 a.m. after waiting for over ten hours for the Nigerian superstar.
The show's organizers said that Wizkid broke his contract and apologised to ticket holders about the development.

“Last night, Wizkid violated his contractual obligations. We sincerely apologized for the disruption. We will give all ticket purchasers their money back. Send your barcode to thelivehubinfo@gmail.com, please. Read the LiveHub nation statement.

However, Wizkid later expressed regret and explained that he did not disrespect his fans by failing to attend the Saturday concert.

2baba: Tuface was accused by a show promoter, Whale Mouth, whose real name is Usiaphe Kevin, of failing to perform in a show he was billed to perform in, suggesting that December was a month when artists failed to honor show contracts. Additionally, the promoter asserted that 2Baba's absence from the Delta State concert had led to death threats against his family.

Whale Mouth, who addressed the issue, asserted that he had paid 2Baba six million naira to perform at the concert and that he is "not a fraud" as previously suggested.

"I am not a con artist; in my entire life, I have never stolen or made a kobo using questionable methods. Before December 25, I paid Tuface the entire N6 million, and we had a signed performance agreement contract; We can attest to that with payment receipts. He stated, "All of our necessary requirements were met in full and on time."

Whale added that since the incident, he had received a number of threatening messages.

Asake: Asake, a sensational artist, was scheduled to perform at a sold-out show in December at Birmingham's The Forum as part of his "Mr. Money with the Vibes" UK tour. He participated in the performance, but he arrived late. Asake didn't show up at the event until 11 p.m., so he arrived hours later than planned. A portion of the audience who were dissatisfied with the way the show's organizers handled things booed him.

On Twitter, a man who was there complained that Asake's performance, which he jokingly compared to a church praise and worship session, had poor crowd management and caused a stampede.

After posting a picture of himself smiling broadly while displaying $100 bills, Asake appeared to take a defiant stance at first, adding fuel to an already raging fire. He then followed up on this post with a screenshot of the well-known song "The Horse, the Man, and the Son" by Ebenezer Obey. In essence, the song is about how one can never please the world.
However, the Terminator crooner later backed off and tweeted an apology to Birmingham fans for being late.

I'm sorry for the delay yesterday, Birmingham. The promoters pushed back my pick-up time for reasons they didn't know about, but I really appreciate your patience and understanding,” the tweet said.
